Can old casement windows be repaired?

Yes, they can, and repairing original windows is the perfect way of bringing them back to life.

However, with modern materials, including slime-profile double glazing, we can make your period casement windows as effective against temperature changes and outside noise as any modern window.

Reduce noise and improve energy efficiency

Retrofitting double glazing into your old casement windows does a lot of good. It helps improve your home’s energy efficiency (saving you money on energy bills each year) and can reduce outside noise to a whisper.

The double glazing we use in our retrofitting projects is suitable for windows in Grade 2 listed buildings and buildings in conservation areas.

It is just as effective as triple glazing but won’t interfere with how your windows look or operate, thanks to its thickness of just under 7 mm.

We use FINEO glass in our casement and sash window reglazing projects.

This is ultra-thin double glazing that uses vacuum-sealed technology. At just under 7 mm thick, it is one of the thinnest double glazing available, yet it is just as effective at saving energy and reducing noise as triple glazing. 

Refurbish rotten casement windows

If you’ve noticed areas of rot on your window frames, you may be thinking that you’ll need to rip them out and replace the frames altogether. You may have even been told the same by another window company in the area.

Well, we disagree. We can refurbish any rotten timber window frames and make them sound.

How do you repair a rotted casement window?

 We first start with an inspection of the casement windows in question.

We look at how bad the rot issues are and then recommend the best treatments based on our experience. In many cases, we remove the rotted areas in the wooden frame and splice in brand new wood cut to perfectly fit and match the existing frame.

We can then treat any smaller areas of rot with a rot treatment that kills the bacteria and use high-quality epoxy to strengthen these areas again. After the above work is done, we will laminate the frame with Accoya or Triacoya wood.

Our goal with timber casement window repairs is to make the window frame secure and sound again without changing the style of the window at all. So, any replacement wood we add will look the same after it is painted, and any treatments we do will not change the appearance at all either. 

Draught proofing casement windows

Draught-proofing does deteriorate over time, and during all of our window restoration projects, it is something we replace or install if the windows did not have draught seals before.

We use modern draught-proofing as it is far superior to the older stuff. It lasts longer and has performed better over the years.

Again, though, the draught-proofing we use will not interfere with the overall look of your windows or home, but it will keep draughts and energy loss at bay. 

Is it better to restore or replace old windows?

In our opinion, it is better to restore the windows you have rather than replace them. Casement windows restoration is often cheaper than replacement, and it won’t change the look of your property at all.
